On the eve of my birthday.

I had this long winded blog entry prepared about how I’m turning 40 and how I said in my 20’s that I wasn’t gonna be a bandhead at 40, as if 40 was the magic cutoff age to have a hobby. Or this particular hobby.

But then I got over it, and I got over myself.

Tomorrow I’ll be a 40 year old woman.

I like HBCU bands – a lot.

And I have nothing to be ashamed of.

Periscope will change your life, and by yours, I mean, any bandhead.

I don’t wanna use this lightly, and in no way do I work for this product….

….but Periscope has changed the game.

What is Periscope, you ask?

Periscope is a (free) app where you can turn your smartphone into a camera and stream your favorite event.

Last week, I went to the Queen City BOTB…and had a ball.  I streamed the event, and although my wifi was suspect (thanks, Sprint, womp womp), my friends and fellow bandheads from all over the country got to see the event live as it was happening.

I’m trying to compile a list of Periscope accounts useful to bandheads. So far, I have:

HBCU Band Accounts
Hampton’s Marching Force – @marchingforce
FAMU’s Marching 100 – @TheMarching100
Clark Atlanta University’s Mighty Marching Panthers  – @caubands
Howard’s Showtime –  @HU_Showtime
Bethune-Cookman’s Marching Wildcats @bcuwildcats

HBCU Band-Related

Drumline Live – @drumlinelive
HBCU Bands @hbcubands
The Marching Podcast – @marchingpodcast
Eight to Five Entertainment – @marching8to5

Not HBCU’s but we still love ’em
Michigan Marching Band – @umichband
McNeese State Band – @mcneesebands
Rutgers Marching Band – @rumarchingband
West Virginia Marching Band – @wvumarchingband
University of South Carolina Marching Band – @thecarolinaband

The Blue Devils – @thebluedevils
Carolina Crown – @carolinacrown
Carolina Crown Brass – @dcicrownbrass
Sacramento Mandarins – @dcimandarins

And finally, yours truly – @Christy5Q

Unfortunately, I am not going to a game today because dissertation. But follow me, because as soon as I get a notification that an HBCU Band is going live, I’ll share it to everyone on my list.

If I forgot anybody, please drop them in the comments section. I’m sure I forgot somebody.

Happy 2015 Marching Season!

Thoughts…

For once, I’m feeling hopeful about the upcoming marching season.

Could HBCU bands be making a comeback after the implications of the FAMU hazing situation?

  • We’ve got Southern, Morehouse, Fayetteville State, and NC Central’s bands (to name a few) with young, new leadership. I’m looking forward to seeing what they bring in the next few years.
  • NC A&T is continuing to innovate in their shows (well so I’ve heard – I’ll be the judge of that this Saturday).
  • There’s a new Drumline movie about to come out that’s gonna put our craft in the spotlight (regardless if it’s accurate or not – but that’s another case for another blog).
  • I’ve heard through the grapevine that Jackson State is posting big numbers, FAMU is making a comeback, and we all know about Talladega…..

Maybe, just maybe these administrators are seeing the value in our programs.

Now all we need to work on is the monotony that is Honda and we will be ok.

Just kidding.

Kinda.

P.S. Not a HBCU band, but Ohio State, I got my eye on you. Don’t think I don’t notice this “culture of sexism/hazing” double standard. *major side-eye*

P.P.S. Anybody gonna be in Charlotte this weekend for the BOTB? Hope to see you up high, near the 50.

Ohio State Band Director Terminated

Wow…..just wow.

This is a game changer. Or maybe it isn’t. Only time will tell.

In other news, I’m back. Did ya miss me? 🙂

Whoa, Grambling…

Now as I said in my very first post on this blog, when it comes to HBCU bands, I haven’t seen it all….but I’ve seen most. Well I will be the first one to tell you that this is something I DID NOT know about.

In the words of one of my favorite bloggers Funky Dineva, “Catch these T’s”…..

Apparently in 1993, Grambling’s Band members openly protested their band director and had him removed! They accused him of reneging on scholarships, favoritism, to name a few. I have not watched the entire clip, but you better believe I will be watching it in it’s entirety between my homework breaks.

Wow, I’m blown that this was all caught on film….and then posted on YouTube. I’m even more blown that the director himself was interviewed.

Current students let this be a notice to you – you have power .Then again, this was 20+ years ago….these band members are a different breed altogether, but I digress…..

Anyway, here’s the clip. The director’s interview is at 11:55. And the melee starts at 19:25. Wow. Interesting piece of HBCU Band History.
